Whole numbers and their order

  • Whole numbers are the natural numbers together with zero. They go on forever; there is no largest whole number.
  • Every whole number has a successor, the next number. Every whole number except zero has a predecessor, the number just before it.
Successor of n
\[n + 1\]
Predecessor of n (n is not zero)
\[n - 1\]

Common mistake: Thinking zero is not a whole number, or that fractions and negative numbers are whole numbers.

Addition and subtraction are inverses

  • Addition combines amounts. Words like 'more', 'total' and 'altogether' usually mean add.
  • Subtraction undoes addition. Use it to find a missing part when the total and one part are known.
Order does not matter in addition
\[a + b = b + a\]
Finding a missing part
\[a + b = c \Rightarrow b = c - a\]

Common mistake: Thinking subtraction can be done in any order. In general, a − b is not the same as b − a.

Multiplication, division and remainders

  • Multiplication is repeated addition. Words like 'each' and 'every' often mean multiply.
  • Division undoes multiplication. The quotient is how many times the divisor fits; the remainder is what is left over.
Order does not matter in multiplication
\[a \times b = b \times a\]
Finding a missing factor
\[a \times b = c \Rightarrow a = c \div b,\ b \neq 0\]
Division rule
\[\text{Dividend} = \text{Divisor} \times \text{Quotient} + \text{Remainder}\]
Remainder is always smaller than the divisor
\[0 \le r < b\]

Common mistake: Writing a remainder that is equal to or bigger than the divisor. This means you can still divide further.

Squares and brackets first

  • The square of a number is that number multiplied by itself.
  • Always solve the part inside brackets first. Then do the multiplication, and do addition last.
Square of a
\[a^2 = a \times a\]
Distributive property
\[a \times (b + c) = a \times b + a \times c\]

Common mistake: Reading a² as a × 2. A square means the number multiplied by itself, not doubled.

  3. What is the remainder when 10 is divided by 3?

    Show answer

    Answer: A. 1

    10 divided by 3 gives a quotient of 3 and a remainder of 1.

  4. What is the square of 5?

    Show answer

    Answer: C. 25
