Integers, Number Line, Absolute Value
- Integers are whole numbers, their negatives, and zero. Negatives lie to the left of zero on the number line.
- Absolute value is the distance of a number from zero. Distance is never negative.
- Every integer a has an opposite, -a, at the same distance from zero on the other side.
Common mistake: Writing the absolute value of a negative number as negative. Absolute value is a distance, so it is never negative.
Adding Integers
- Same signs: add the absolute values and keep the common sign.
- Different signs: subtract the smaller absolute value from the larger one. Use the sign of the number with the larger absolute value.
- An integer plus its opposite always gives zero. They are called additive inverses.
Common mistake: Adding the absolute values when the signs are different. When the signs differ, you must subtract them instead.
Subtracting Integers
- To subtract an integer, add its opposite.
- Subtracting a negative number is the same as adding a positive number.
Common mistake: Treating a - (-b) as a - b. The two minus signs together become a plus.
Multiplying and Dividing Integers
- First multiply or divide the absolute values, then decide the sign.
- Same signs give a positive answer. Different signs give a negative answer.
- Work out the brackets first, then multiply or divide.
Common mistake: Thinking a negative times a negative is negative. Two negatives multiplied or divided always give a positive answer.
Exam tips
- In word problems, below sea level, loss and falling are negative. Above, gain, rising and increasing are positive.
- Distance from sea level or zero means the absolute value of the final position.
- Check the sign of your final answer carefully before choosing an option.
