Place value and comparing decimals
- Digits after the decimal point show tenths, then hundredths, then thousandths, moving right.
- To compare decimals, compare whole parts first, then tenths, then hundredths, digit by digit.
- Adding zeros at the end of a decimal does not change its value.
Common mistake: Thinking 0.12 is bigger than 0.8 because 12 is bigger than 8. Compare tenths first.
Fractions as decimals
- A fraction means numerator divided by denominator.
- Make the denominator ten, hundred or thousand, or simply divide to get the decimal.
Common mistake: Copying digits of the fraction after the point instead of actually dividing numerator by denominator.
Adding and subtracting decimals
- Write numbers one below the other with decimal points in a straight line.
- Fill empty places with zeros, then add or subtract like whole numbers.
- Keep the decimal point in the answer directly under the other points.
Common mistake: Lining up digits from the right end instead of lining up the decimal points.
Multiplying decimals
- Ignore the points and multiply as whole numbers first.
- Decimal places in the product equal the total decimal places in both numbers.
- Multiplying by ten, hundred, thousand moves the point one, two, three places right.
Common mistake: Counting decimal places of only one number when placing the point in the product.
Dividing decimals
- Make the divisor a whole number by moving its point right.
- Move the point in the dividend the same number of places, then divide normally.
Common mistake: Moving the decimal point in the divisor but forgetting to move it in the dividend too.
Exam tips
- Estimate first: check if your answer is sensible in size.
- Write extra zeros so all numbers have the same decimal places.
- In word problems, find whether to add, subtract, multiply or divide first.
