Meaning of Mode

  • The mode is the observation that occurs most often in a set of data.
  • It is a measure of central tendency, like the mean and the median.
  • The mode is always one of the values in the data set itself.
Definition of mode
\[\text{Mode} = \text{observation with the highest frequency}\]

Common mistake: Writing the frequency (how many times it appears) as the answer instead of the observation that appears most often.

Counting Frequencies Carefully

  • The frequency of a value is the number of times it appears in the data.
  • Arrange the data in ascending order or make a tally table so equal values sit together.
  • Compare all frequencies and pick the value with the largest one.
Frequency of a value
\[f_i = \text{number of times } x_i \text{ occurs}\]
Check total count
\[\sum f_i = n\]

Common mistake: Missing a repeated value scattered in an unsorted list, which makes its frequency too small and gives the wrong mode.

Data With More Than One Mode

  • A data set can have more than one mode.
  • If several values share the same highest frequency, each of them is a mode.
Condition for a mode
\[x_k \text{ is a mode if } f_k = \max(f_i)\]

Common mistake: Choosing the largest value, or the value that appears first, instead of the value with the highest frequency.

Sample questions

  1. What is the mode of the following set of numbers: 3, 5, 3, 7, 9?

    Show answer

    Answer: A. 3

The mode is the number that appears most frequently in a data set. Here, the number 3 appears twice while the others appear only once.

  2. Which of these numbers is the mode of the following dataset: 8, 8, 7, 6, 6, 6, 5?

    Show answer

    Answer: B. 6

The mode is 6, as it appears three times in the dataset, which is more than 8 or any other number.

  3. What is the mode of the dataset: 15, 15, 20, 20, 20, 25, 30?

    Show answer

    Answer: B. 20

The mode is the value that appears most often. In this set, 20 appears three times, more than any other value.

  4. From the set {2, 3, 3, 5, 5, 1, 4, 4, 5}, what is the mode?

    Show answer

    Answer: D. 5

5 appears three times, more than any other number in the dataset, and thus it is the mode.

  5. In the list {20, 20, 21, 20, 22, 23, 23}, what is the mode?

    Show answer

    Answer: A. 20

The mode is 20, appearing four times in the set, the most of any number.
