Meaning of the median

  • The median is the middle value of data arranged in ascending or descending order.
  • Half the observations lie on or below it, and half lie on or above it.
Arrange data in order first
\[x_1 \le x_2 \le x_3 \le \dots \le x_n\]

Common mistake: Picking the middle number of the list as it is given, without first arranging the data in order.

Median when n is odd

  • Count the number of observations n. If n is odd, there is exactly one middle value.
  • That single middle observation, after ordering, is the median.
Median for odd n
\[\text{Median} = \left(\frac{n+1}{2}\right)^{\text{th}} \text{ observation}\]

Common mistake: Using n/2 as the position for odd n. This does not give a whole number, so the true middle term is missed.

Median when n is even

  • If n is even, there are two middle values after arranging the data in order.
  • The median is the average of these two middle values, so it may not be one of the data values.
Median for even n
\[\text{Median} = \frac{\left(\frac{n}{2}\right)^{\text{th}} \text{ obs.} + \left(\frac{n}{2}+1\right)^{\text{th}} \text{ obs.}}{2}\]

Common mistake: Choosing only one of the two middle values instead of adding both and dividing by two.

Sample questions

  1. What is the median of the following set of numbers: 3, 1, 4, 2, 5?

    Show answer

    Answer: B. 3

To find the median, first arrange the numbers in ascending order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. The median is the middle number, which is 3.

  2. In the set of numbers 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, what is the median?

    Show answer

    Answer: B. 30

Arrange the numbers in order (already sorted): 10, 20, 30, 40, 50. The middle value is 30, as it is the third number in a set of five.

  3. Determine the median of these numbers: 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50.

    Show answer

    Answer: B. 37.5

    Numbers arranged in order: 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50. The median is the average of 35 and 40, giving (35 + 40) / 2 = 37.5.

  4. What is the median of the test scores: 85, 90, 95, 80, 75?

    Show answer

    Answer: A. 85

Sort the scores: 75, 80, 85, 90, 95. The median is the middle number, which is 85.

  5. If the ages are 60, 62, 65, 68, 70, what is the median?

    Show answer

    Answer: A. 65

    Ordered: 60, 62, 65, 68, 70. The median, the middle value, is 65.
