Multiplying Integers and Sign Rules
- Multiplication is repeated addition: a × b means adding a to itself b times.
- Same signs give a positive product. Different signs give a negative product.
Common mistake: Thinking a negative times a negative is negative. Two negative signs always give a positive product.
Properties of Multiplication
- Order and grouping do not change the product, so multiply in any convenient order.
- Split a large number into tens and ones, multiply each part, then add.
Common mistake: Using the distributive property but multiplying only one part, such as writing a × (b + c) = a × b + c.
Division as Inverse of Multiplication
- Division is equal sharing or grouping. It undoes multiplication.
- If a ÷ b = q, then q × b = a. The answer q is called the quotient.
Common mistake: Mixing up the dividend and the divisor. In a ÷ b, a is shared into b equal parts, not b into a parts.
Properties of Division
- Dividing any integer by 1 gives the same integer. Dividing a non-zero number by itself gives 1.
- Division is not commutative, and division by zero is not defined.
Common mistake: Writing a ÷ 0 = 0 or a ÷ 0 = a. Division by zero has no answer; it is undefined.
Exam tips
- Check a division answer by multiplying the quotient by the divisor. You should get the dividend.
- Words like product, times and multiplied by mean multiply. Share equally, quotient and divided by mean divide.
- Know your multiplication tables well. They make both multiplying and dividing faster and more accurate.
