Adding Integers with Same Sign

  • When both integers have the same sign, add their absolute values.
  • Keep the common sign. Two positives give a positive. Two negatives give a negative.
Both positive
\[(+a) + (+b) = +(a + b)\]
Both negative
\[(-a) + (-b) = -(a + b)\]

Common mistake: Thinking two negatives added give a positive. That rule is for multiplication. A sum of negatives is always negative.

Adding Integers with Different Signs

  • Subtract the smaller absolute value from the larger absolute value.
  • The answer takes the sign of the integer with the larger absolute value.
  • An integer plus its additive inverse always gives zero.
Different signs, |a| > |b|
\[a + b = \text{sign of } a \times (|a| - |b|)\]
Additive inverse
\[a + (-a) = 0\]

Common mistake: Adding the absolute values instead of subtracting them, or giving the answer the sign of the smaller absolute value.

Subtraction Means Adding the Opposite

  • To subtract an integer, add its additive inverse (opposite).
  • Change the minus to plus and flip the sign of the second number. Then add.
Subtracting a positive
\[a - b = a + (-b)\]
Subtracting a negative
\[a - (-b) = a + b\]
Smaller minus larger
\[\text{If } b > a > 0, \; a - b = -(b - a)\]

Common mistake: Forgetting that subtracting a negative number is the same as adding a positive number.

Finding Unknowns and Substituting Values

  • To find x, undo the addition by adding the opposite to both sides.
  • To evaluate an expression, replace the letter by its value, keeping the sign in brackets.
Solving for x
\[x + (-b) = c \Rightarrow x = c + b\]
Substitution
\[\text{If } a = -n, \; a - m = -n - m = -(n + m)\]

Common mistake: Dropping the negative sign of the given value when substituting, which turns a negative number into a positive one.

Sample questions

  1. What is 5 + 3?

    Show answer

    Answer: B. 8

To find the sum of 5 and 3, simply add them together. 5 + 3 equals 8.

  2. Calculate 15 + (-7).

    Show answer

    Answer: B. 8

Adding a negative number to a positive number means subtracting. So, 15 - 7 equals 8.

  3. Solve: -12 - (-5).

    Show answer

    Answer: A. -7

When subtracting a negative number, it’s like adding. Therefore, -12 + 5 results in -7.

  4. What is -2 - 9?

    Show answer

    Answer: A. -11

Subtracting a positive value from a negative value results in a more negative value. Thus, -2 - 9 = -11.

  5. What is the result of -16 - (-4)?

    Show answer

    Answer: A. -12

    Subtracting a negative is like adding: -16 + 4 = -12.
