Polygons and Their Names
- A polygon is a closed figure made only of line segments. Segments are sides; corners where sides meet are vertices.
- Polygons are named by number of sides: quadrilateral has 4, hexagon 6, octagon 8. Learn prefixes like penta, hepta, deca.
- A regular polygon has all sides equal AND all angles equal. Open figures or curved figures are not polygons.
Common mistake: Thinking equal sides alone make a polygon regular. A rhombus has equal sides, but its angles may differ, so it is not regular.
Angles and Types of Triangles
- Acute angle is less than a right angle; obtuse is between a right and straight angle; reflex is more than straight.
- A triangle's angles always add up to a straight angle. So a triangle can never have two right or obtuse angles.
- By sides: scalene has no equal sides, isosceles has two equal sides, equilateral has all sides equal.
Common mistake: Listing shapes like 'circle' or 'square' as angle types. Angle types are only acute, right, obtuse, straight, reflex and complete.
Types of Quadrilaterals
- Trapezium has exactly a single pair of parallel sides. Parallelogram has both pairs of opposite sides parallel.
- Rhombus: all sides equal, opposite angles equal. Rectangle: all angles right angles. Square: all sides and all angles equal.
Common mistake: Mixing up rhombus and square. Both have equal sides, but only a square must have all angles as right angles.
Parts of a Circle
- Radius joins the centre to a point on the circle. Diameter is a chord passing through the centre.
- A chord joins any two points on the circle. A tangent touches the circle at exactly a single point.
- Circumference is the distance around the circle. An arc is a part of the circle.
Common mistake: Thinking every chord passes through the centre. Only the diameter does, and it is the longest chord.
Faces, Edges, Vertices of Solids
- Faces are flat surfaces, edges are lines where two faces meet, vertices are corners where edges meet.
- Cubes and cuboids (rectangular prisms) have the same counts of faces, edges and vertices; only their shapes differ.
Common mistake: Confusing edges with vertices. Count corners for vertices and count line segments for edges.
Exam tips
- Read each option carefully; words like 'all', 'only' and 'exactly' change the answer.
- Use the triangle angle sum to check questions about obtuse or right angles quickly.
- Picture or sketch the shape before counting sides, faces, edges or vertices.
