Types of Angles

  • A right angle is a quarter turn. Two perpendicular lines always meet at a right angle.
  • An acute angle is smaller than a right angle. An obtuse angle is bigger than a right angle but smaller than a straight angle.
  • A straight angle is half a turn and looks like a straight line. A full rotation is one complete turn.
Straight angle
\[\text{straight angle} = 2 \times \text{right angle}\]
Full rotation
\[\text{full turn} = 4 \times \text{right angle}\]
Acute angle
\[0^\circ < x < \text{right angle}\]
Obtuse angle
\[\text{right angle} < x < \text{straight angle}\]

Common mistake: Calling any angle bigger than a right angle obtuse. An angle bigger than a straight angle is a reflex angle, not obtuse.

Complementary and Supplementary Angles

  • Two angles are complementary if together they make a right angle.
  • Two angles are supplementary if together they make a straight angle.
  • To find the missing angle, subtract the known angle from the total.
Complementary
\[a + b = \text{right angle}\]
Supplementary
\[a + b = \text{straight angle}\]

Common mistake: Mixing up the two words. Complementary angles make a right angle. Supplementary angles make a straight angle.

Angles in a Triangle

  • The three angles of any triangle always add up to a straight angle.
  • A triangle with one right angle is a right-angled triangle. All angles of an equilateral triangle are equal.
  • An exterior angle equals the sum of the two interior opposite angles.
Angle sum property
\[\angle A + \angle B + \angle C = \text{straight angle}\]
Third angle
\[\angle C = \text{straight angle} - (\angle A + \angle B)\]
Equilateral triangle
\[\text{each angle} = \frac{1}{3} \times \text{straight angle}\]
Exterior angle property
\[\text{exterior angle} = a + b\]

Common mistake: Adding the interior angle next to the exterior angle. Use only the two interior angles that are opposite to it.

Angles in Quadrilaterals

  • The four angles of any quadrilateral add up to one full turn.
  • In a parallelogram, opposite angles are equal. Adjacent angles are supplementary.
Angle sum of quadrilateral
\[\angle A + \angle B + \angle C + \angle D = \text{full turn}\]
Parallelogram opposite angles
\[\angle A = \angle C, \quad \angle B = \angle D\]

Common mistake: Using the triangle angle sum for a quadrilateral. A quadrilateral's angles add up to a full turn, not a straight angle.

Sample questions

  1. How many degrees is a right angle?

    Show answer

    Answer: B. 90

A right angle measures exactly 90 degrees.

  2. What is the measure of an angle formed by two perpendicular lines?

    Show answer

    Answer: A. 90

Two perpendicular lines form a right angle, which measures 90 degrees.

  3. If two angles are supplementary and one measures 120 degrees, what is the measure of the other angle?

    Show answer

    Answer: B. 60

Supplementary angles sum up to 180 degrees. If one angle is 120 degrees, the other is 180 - 120 = 60 degrees.

  4. What is the measure of each angle in an equilateral triangle?

    Show answer

    Answer: B. 60 degrees

In an equilateral triangle, all angles are equal and sum to 180 degrees, so each angle is 60 degrees.

  5. What is the exterior angle of a triangle if its opposite interior angles measure 50 degrees and 70 degrees?

    Show answer

    Answer: A. 120 degrees

The exterior angle of a triangle is equal to the sum of its opposite interior angles. Thus, it is 50 + 70 = 120 degrees.
