Properties of multiplication

  • Multiplication is repeated addition: a times b means adding a, b times.
  • Order and grouping do not change a product, so multiply numbers in any convenient order.
Commutative
\[a \times b = b \times a\]
Associative
\[(a \times b) \times c = a \times (b \times c)\]
Zero property
\[a \times 0 = 0\]

Common mistake: Adding the numbers instead of multiplying them when a question says 'product' or 'times'.

Multiplication in word problems

  • When equal groups are combined, multiply the number of groups by the amount in each group.
  • Area, total cost and distance travelled are all found by multiplying two quantities.
Equal groups
\[\text{Total} = \text{groups} \times \text{items per group}\]
Area of rectangle
\[A = l \times b\]
Distance
\[\text{Distance} = \text{speed} \times \text{time}\]
Total cost
\[\text{Cost} = \text{price of one} \times \text{quantity}\]

Common mistake: Forgetting to convert units first, for example multiplying days directly without changing them into hours.

Multiplying monomials

  • Multiply the numerical coefficients together, then multiply the variables together.
  • Same variables combine using powers; different variables are written side by side.
Coefficients and variables
\[(m a) \times (n b) = (m n)\, ab\]
Same base
\[a^{m} \times a^{n} = a^{m+n}\]

Common mistake: Adding the coefficients instead of multiplying them, or multiplying only the coefficients and dropping the variables.

Distributive law for expressions

  • To multiply by a bracket, multiply every term inside the bracket.
  • For two binomials, multiply each term of the first by each term of the second, then combine like terms.
Monomial times binomial
\[a(b + c) = ab + ac\]
Binomial times binomial
\[(a + b)(c + d) = ac + ad + bc + bd\]
Sign rule
\[(+a) \times (-b) = -ab\]

Common mistake: Multiplying only the first terms of each bracket, or losing the minus sign when multiplying a negative term.

Sample questions

  1. What is the product of 3 and 4?

    Show answer

    Answer: B. 12

To find the product of 3 and 4, we multiply the two numbers: 3 * 4 = 12.

  2. If each apple costs $2 and you buy 8 apples, how much do you spend?

    Show answer

    Answer: A. 16

The total cost is calculated by multiplying the price per apple by the number of apples: 2 * 8 = 16.

  3. If a car travels 60 km in 1 hour, how far will it travel in 5 hours?

    Show answer

    Answer: A. 300

    Multiply the speed by the time: 60 km/h * 5 hours = 300 km.

  4. Find the product of (2a) and (3b).

    Show answer

    Answer: B. 6ab

To multiply (2a) by (3b), multiply the coefficients (2 and 3) giving 6 and then multiply the variables a and b together as ab. The result is 6ab.

  5. Simplify (x^2 - 2x + 1) * x.

    Show answer

    Answer: A. x^3 - 2x^2 + x

    Multiply x with each term: x*(x^2) = x^3, x*(-2x) = -2x^2, and x*1 = x, resulting in x^3 - 2x^2 + x.
