Like and Unlike Terms

  • A term is a product of a number (coefficient) and variables, like ax or by.
  • Like terms have the same variables raised to the same powers. Only their coefficients may differ.
  • Unlike terms have different variables or different powers, such as x and y, or x and x squared.
Like terms
\[ax \text{ and } bx\]
Unlike terms
\[ax \text{ and } by\]
Unlike (different powers)
\[ax \text{ and } bx^{2}\]

Common mistake: Thinking x and x squared are like terms just because both use the letter x.

Adding and Subtracting Like Terms

  • To add or subtract like terms, add or subtract their coefficients only.
  • The variable part stays exactly the same in the answer.
  • A term with no written coefficient, like x, has coefficient one.
Adding like terms
\[ax + bx = (a+b)x\]
Subtracting like terms
\[ax - bx = (a-b)x\]
Hidden coefficient
\[x = 1x\]

Common mistake: Changing the variable while combining, like writing x + x as x squared instead of 2x.

Unlike Terms Stay Separate

  • Unlike terms cannot be combined into a single term. They are left joined by plus or minus.
  • In a long expression, group the like terms together, then combine each group.
Cannot combine
\[ax + by \text{ stays as } ax + by\]
Group like terms
\[ax + by + cx = (a+c)x + by\]

Common mistake: Joining unlike terms, like writing ax + by as (a+b)xy. Unlike terms must stay separate.

Adding and Subtracting Whole Expressions

  • To add expressions, remove the brackets and combine like terms.
  • To subtract an expression, change the sign of every term inside its bracket, then add.
Adding expressions
\[(ax + b) + (cx + d) = (a+c)x + (b+d)\]
Minus before a bracket
\[-(cx + d) = -cx - d\]
Subtracting expressions
\[(ax + b) - (cx + d) = (a-c)x + (b-d)\]

Common mistake: Changing the sign of only the first term inside the bracket when subtracting, instead of every term.

Sample questions

  1. What is the sum of 5 and 7?

    Show answer

    Answer: C. 12

To find the sum, you add the numbers together: 5 + 7 = 12.

  2. Find the result of 100 - 45.

    Show answer

    Answer: A. 55

    Perform the subtraction: 100 - 45 = 55.

  3. What is the sum of 235 and 765?

    Show answer

    Answer: B. 1000

    Add the two numbers together: 235 + 765 = 1000.

  4. What is the result of adding 7x + 9x?

    Show answer

    Answer: A. 16x

    To add 7x and 9x, combine the coefficients: 7 + 9 = 16, resulting in 16x.

  5. Combine like terms in 2a + 3a - a

    Show answer

    Answer: A. 4a

    Add and subtract the coefficients: 2 + 3 - 1 = 4, resulting in 4a.
