Reflection and Lines of Symmetry

  • A reflection flips a figure over a mirror line, giving a mirror image of it.
  • Each image point is the same distance from the mirror line as its original point.
  • A line of symmetry divides a figure into two halves that match exactly when folded.
Regular polygon with n sides
\[\text{lines of symmetry} = n\]

Common mistake: Thinking a reflection changes size or shape. Only the left-right orientation is reversed; lengths, angles and shape stay the same.

Reflecting Points on Axes

  • Reflecting over the x-axis keeps x the same and changes the sign of y.
  • Reflecting over the y-axis keeps y the same and changes the sign of x.
Reflection in x-axis
\[(x, y) \rightarrow (x, -y)\]
Reflection in y-axis
\[(x, y) \rightarrow (-x, y)\]

Common mistake: Mixing up the axes. Over the x-axis, the y-coordinate changes sign. Over the y-axis, the x-coordinate changes sign.

Rotation and Rotational Symmetry

  • A rotation turns a figure about a fixed point called the centre of rotation.
  • The order is how many times a figure looks exactly the same during one full turn.
  • Clockwise means turning the same way as clock hands. Anticlockwise means turning the opposite way.
Smallest angle of rotation
\[\text{angle} = \frac{\text{one full turn}}{\text{order}}\]
Regular polygon with n sides
\[\text{order of rotational symmetry} = n\]

Common mistake: Counting the starting position twice, or forgetting it. Count each matching position once during one complete turn.

Rigid Transformations

  • Reflection, rotation and translation are rigid transformations. They keep shape and size the same.
  • Enlargement (dilation) keeps the shape but changes the size, so it is not rigid.

Common mistake: Calling enlargement a rigid transformation. Rigid means both shape and size stay unchanged.

Sample questions

  1. What is reflection in symmetry?

    Show answer

Answer: B. Flipping an object over a line

Reflection in symmetry means flipping an object over a line, creating a mirror image.

  2. Which transformation is NOT a type of rigid transformation?

    Show answer

    Answer: D. Stretching

Rigid transformations such as Reflection, Translation, and Rotation preserve the shape and size of figures, unlike Stretching, which alters them.

  3. What is the reflected image of point (-2, 5) over the y-axis?

    Show answer

    Answer: A. (2, 5)

Reflecting over the y-axis changes the sign of the x-coordinate. So, (-2, 5) becomes (2, 5).

  4. Which polygon has rotational symmetry of order 4?

    Show answer

    Answer: B. Square

A square can be rotated at 90-degree intervals and still appear the same, thus it has an order of rotational symmetry of 4.

  5. In a reflection, what remains unchanged?

    Show answer

Answer: D. Both shape and size

During a reflection, the shape and size remain unchanged, though the orientation may change.
