Mean: The Average Value
- The mean is the sum of all observations divided by the number of observations.
- If the mean is known, multiply it by the count to get the total sum.
- Adding the same number k to every value increases the mean by exactly k.
Common mistake: Dividing by the wrong count, such as forgetting to include the unknown value x when counting how many observations there are.
Median: The Middle Value
- First arrange the data in ascending or descending order.
- The median is the middle value. For an even count, average the two middle values.
Common mistake: Picking the middle value without first arranging the data in order.
Mode: The Most Frequent Value
- The mode is the value that occurs most often in the data.
- If no value repeats, the data has no mode.
- A data set can have more than one mode if values tie.
Common mistake: Saying the mode is the largest value, or giving its frequency (how many times it appears) instead of the value itself.
Mean of Consecutive Natural Numbers
- For the numbers 1 to n, find the sum using the formula, then divide by n.
- The result equals the average of the first and last numbers.
Common mistake: Stopping after finding the sum and forgetting to divide it by n to get the mean.
Exam tips
- Always count the observations carefully before dividing to find the mean.
- For the median, write the numbers in order first, even if they look sorted.
- Check a missing-value answer by putting it back and recalculating the mean.

Sample questions
What is the mean of the data set: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8?
Show answer
Answer: C. 6
To find the mean, add up all the numbers and divide by the number of items. (4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8) / 5 = 6.
What is the mean of the data set: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50?
Show answer
Answer: A. 30
Calculate the mean by adding all numbers and dividing by the count: (10 + 20 + 30 + 40 + 50) / 5 = 30.
What is the mode of the data: 2, 4, 4, 4, 6, 8, 10?
Show answer
Answer: B. 4
The number 4 appears most frequently in the data set; therefore, it is the mode.
Find the mode of the set if there is no repetition: {11, 13, 15, 17}.
Show answer
Answer: D. None
There is no repetition in this set, hence there is no mode.
A data set is represented as: 10, 12, 14, 16. If an unknown value x is added to make the mean 13, what is x?
Show answer
Answer: D. 18
Mean becomes: (10 + 12 + 14 + 16 + x) / 5 = 13. Solving gives x = 18.
