Fraction as Part of Whole
- A fraction shows how many equal parts are taken out of the total number of equal parts.
- The numerator counts the parts taken. The denominator counts all the equal parts of the whole.
Common mistake: Writing the total parts on top and the parts taken at the bottom, which flips the fraction.
Fraction of a Quantity
- The word 'of' means multiply. To find a fraction of a number, multiply the fraction by that number.
- To find the part left, subtract the part used from the whole quantity.
Common mistake: Giving the part already used when the question asks for the part left or remaining.
Adding and Subtracting Unlike Fractions
- Before adding or subtracting, make the denominators the same, using the LCM of the denominators.
- Use subtraction for words like 'remains', 'left', 'how much more' or 'what is needed to fill'.
Common mistake: Subtracting numerators and denominators separately, like top minus top over bottom minus bottom. Always make denominators equal first.
Multiplying Fractions
- Multiply numerators together and denominators together, then simplify.
- Repeating a fractional amount n times means multiplying the fraction by the whole number n.
Common mistake: Multiplying both numerator and denominator by the whole number. Only the numerator gets multiplied.
Dividing a Fraction Equally
- When a fractional amount is shared equally among n people, divide the fraction by n.
- Dividing by n is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal, one over n.
Common mistake: Multiplying by n instead of dividing, which gives each person more than the total amount shared.
Exam tips
- Spot keywords: 'of' means multiply, 'shared equally' means divide, 'left' or 'more' means subtract.
- Always write your final answer in lowest terms by dividing top and bottom by their HCF.
- Write units like litres, pages, km or hectares with your final answer.
