What Makes a Polynomial
- A polynomial is a sum of terms, each a number times a variable raised to a whole-number power.
- Expressions with the variable in a denominator, under a root, or with negative powers are NOT polynomials.
- By number of terms: one term is a monomial, two terms a binomial, three terms a trinomial.
Common mistake: Calling expressions like \frac{1}{x} or \sqrt{x} polynomials. Every power of the variable must be a whole number.
Degree, Coefficients and Constant
- The degree is the highest power of the variable that appears with a non-zero coefficient.
- A coefficient is the number multiplied by a power of the variable. The constant term has no variable.
Common mistake: Taking the first term's power as the degree without checking all terms, or forgetting the sign that belongs with a coefficient.
Value of a Polynomial
- To find p(a), replace every x with a, then simplify using the correct order of operations.
- Put brackets around negative values before squaring or cubing them.
Common mistake: Writing -a^2 instead of (-a)^2 when substituting a negative number. Brackets change the sign of the answer.
Zeroes and Factors
- A number a is a zero of p(x) if p(a) = 0. Then (x - a) is a factor.
- Split the middle term to factor a quadratic. Set each factor equal to zero to solve the equation.
Common mistake: Getting signs wrong. If (x - a) is a factor, the zero is +a, not -a.
Exam tips
- Check a factored form by multiplying the brackets back out.
- Check each zero you find by substituting it into the polynomial.
- Write terms in descending powers first to spot the degree and coefficients easily.

Sample questions
What is a polynomial?
Show answer
Answer: B. An algebraic expression with variables raised to whole number powers
A polynomial is defined as an algebraic expression that has variables raised only to whole number powers.
What is the degree of the polynomial 4x^3 + 3x + 7?
Show answer
Answer: B. 3
The degree of a polynomial is the highest power of the variable in it. Here, the highest power is 3 from the term 4x^3.
Which of the following is the factored form of x^2 - 5x + 6?
Show answer
Answer: A. (x - 2)(x - 3)
To factor x^2 - 5x + 6, we look for two numbers that multiply to 6 and add to -5. These are -2 and -3.
If p(x) = x^3 + 3x^2 - x - 3, what is p(-3)?
Show answer
Answer: B. 0
Substituting -3 into the polynomial p(-3) = (-3)^3 + 3(-3)^2 - (-3) - 3 = -27 + 27 + 3 - 3 = 0.
Which polynomial is a factor of x^3 - 3x^2 - 4x + 12?
Show answer
Answer: B. x - 3
Using synthetic division, we can confirm that x - 3 is indeed a factor of the polynomial x^3 - 3x^2 - 4x + 12.
