Mean: the average value
- The mean shares the total equally among all the observations.
- Add all the observations, then divide the sum by how many observations there are.
Common mistake: Dividing by the largest number, or by the wrong count. Always divide by how many observations there are.
Median: the middle value
- First arrange the data in increasing order. The median is the value exactly in the middle.
- If the count is odd, one value is in the middle. If even, take the mean of the two middle values.
Common mistake: Picking the middle value without first arranging the data in increasing order. Always sort the data first.
Mode: the most frequent value
- The mode is the observation that occurs the greatest number of times.
- Count how often each value appears. The value with the highest count is the mode.
Common mistake: Giving the frequency (how many times it appears) as the answer instead of the value itself.
Mode works for non-number data
- The mode can be found even for things like colours, fruits or names, not only numbers.
- The item that appears most often is the mode. The mean and median need numbers.
Common mistake: Writing the count instead of the item. If pens appear most often, the mode is pens, not the number of pens.
Exam tips
- Rewrite the data in increasing order before finding the median or counting for the mode.
- Tick off each value as you count it so you do not miss or repeat any.
- Check that your mean lies between the smallest and largest values.

Sample questions
What is the mean of the numbers 4, 8, 6, and 10?
Show answer
Answer: B. 7
To find the mean, sum the numbers (4 + 8 + 6 + 10 = 28) and divide by the count of numbers (4). Mean = 28 / 4 = 7.
Find the median of the set of numbers: 3, 5, 1, 9, 7.
Show answer
Answer: B. 5
First, arrange the numbers in ascending order: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9. The median is the middle number, which is 5.
The ages of a group of friends are: 12, 15, 15, 10, 13. What is the mode of their ages?
Show answer
Answer: C. 15
The ages are 12, 15, 15, 10, 13. Here, age 15 appears most frequently, which is 2 times.
In a basket, there are 2 apples, 3 oranges, and 5 bananas. What is the mode of the fruits in the basket?
Show answer
Answer: C. Bananas
In this case, bananas are the most common fruit, occurring 5 times compared to other fruits.
In a data set {5, 10, 15, 15, 20, 20, 20, 25}, what is the mode?
Show answer
Answer: B. 20
20 is the most frequent number in this data set, appearing 3 times, making it the mode.
