What Loss Means
- Cost Price (CP) is what you pay to buy an item. Selling Price (SP) is what you get when you sell it.
- If SP is less than CP, you make a loss. The loss is the money you lose.
Common mistake: Subtracting CP from SP instead of SP from CP, which gives a negative loss.
Finding the Loss Percentage
- Loss percentage shows the loss as a part of every 100 of the cost price.
- Always divide the loss by the cost price, never by the selling price.
Common mistake: Dividing the loss by the selling price instead of the cost price.
Finding SP from CP
- When you know CP and the loss percent, first find the loss as a percent of CP.
- Then take this loss away from CP to get SP.
Common mistake: Adding the loss to CP instead of subtracting it, which gives an SP bigger than CP.
Finding CP from SP
- If CP is taken as 100, then SP is 100 minus the loss percent.
- Use this link to work back from SP to the original CP.
Common mistake: Finding the loss percent of SP and adding it to SP. The loss percent is always on CP, not SP.
Exam tips
- Check your answer: in a loss, CP must always be greater than SP.
- Write CP, SP and the loss percent clearly before choosing a formula.
- Units stay the same: if CP is in dollars, SP and loss are also in dollars.

Sample questions
A pen is sold for $40 after a loss of 20%. What was the cost price of the pen?
Show answer
Answer: B. $50
If the selling price is $40 and there's a loss of 20%, the formula to calculate cost price is: Cost Price = Selling Price / (1 - Loss Percentage). Thus, Cost Price = 40 / (1 - 0.20) = 40 / 0.80 = $50.
An item was sold at a loss of 25%. If the selling price is $75, what was the cost price?
Show answer
Answer: B. $100
Using the formula: Cost Price = Selling Price / (1 - Loss Percentage). Here, Cost Price = 75 / (1 - 0.25) = 75 / 0.75 = $100.
A student bought a bike for $540 and sold it for $486. What was the loss percentage?
Show answer
Answer: A. 10%
Loss = Cost Price - Selling Price = 540 - 486 = $54. Loss Percentage = (Loss / Cost Price) * 100 = (54 / 540) * 100 = 10%.
An electronic gadget is bought for $800 and sold for $680. Calculate the loss percentage.
Show answer
Answer: B. 15%
Loss = Cost Price - Selling Price = 800 - 680 = $120. Loss Percentage = (Loss / Cost Price) * 100 = (120 / 800) * 100 = 15%.
A dealer bought three dozen eggs for $120 and sold them at a loss of 10%. How much did he sell all the eggs for?
Show answer
Answer: A. $108
Cost Price of three dozen eggs = $120. Loss = 10% of $120 = $12. Selling Price = Cost Price - Loss = 120 - 12 = $108.
