Area of Rectangles and Squares
- Area is the amount of flat surface a shape covers. It is measured in square units like cm² or m².
- Rectangle area is length times breadth. A square has equal sides, so its area is side times side.
- If you know the area and one side, divide the area by that side to get the other side.
Common mistake: Adding the sides (finding perimeter) instead of multiplying them, or writing the answer in cm instead of cm².
Parallelogram and Triangle Area
- A parallelogram's area is its base times its height. The height is perpendicular to the base.
- A triangle is half of a parallelogram with the same base and height, so its area is half.
Common mistake: Using the slanting side length as the height. The height must be perpendicular (at a right angle) to the base.
Trapezium and Rhombus Area
- A trapezium has two parallel sides. Add them, multiply by the height, then take half.
- A rhombus has two diagonals that cut each other at right angles. Its area is half their product.
Common mistake: Forgetting to take half in the trapezium or rhombus formula, or multiplying the two parallel sides instead of adding them.
Area of a Circle
- A circle's area is pi times the radius times the radius.
- The radius goes from the centre to the edge. The diameter is twice the radius.
Common mistake: Using the diameter in place of the radius, or using the circumference formula 2πr instead of πr².
Exam tips
- Always write area answers in square units, such as cm² or m².
- Make sure all lengths are in the same unit before multiplying.
- Read carefully: covering a surface needs area, while going around the edge needs perimeter.

Sample questions
What is the area of a rectangle with a length of 4 cm and a width of 3 cm?
Show answer
Answer: A. 12 cm²
The area of a rectangle is calculated by multiplying the length by the width. So, the area is 4 cm * 3 cm = 12 cm².
A rectangle has a length of 10 m and a width of 2 m. What is its area?
Show answer
Answer: A. 20 m²
The area of the rectangle is calculated by multiplying its length by its width. So, area = 10 m * 2 m = 20 m².
A rectangle has an area of 50 m² and a length of 10 m. What is the width?
Show answer
Answer: A. 5 m
To find the width, use the formula area = length * width. Rearranging gives width = area / length. So, width = 50 m² / 10 m = 5 m.
A floor is 10 m long and 8 m wide. How many square meters of carpet are needed to cover it?
Show answer
Answer: A. 80 m²
To find the carpet area, compute the area of the floor: Area = length * width = 10 m * 8 m = 80 m².
Calculate the area of a rhombus with diagonals of 10 cm and 6 cm.
Show answer
Answer: A. 30 cm²
The area of a rhombus is calculated using the formula (d1 * d2) / 2, where d1 and d2 are the lengths of the diagonals. So area = (10 cm * 6 cm) / 2 = 30 cm².
