Points, Lines, Polygons and Tangents

  • A point shows an exact position. It has no length, width or thickness.
  • A polygon is a closed figure of line segments: triangle has three sides, quadrilateral has four.
  • A regular polygon has all sides equal and all angles equal. A tangent touches a curve at one point.
Angle sum of a triangle
\[\angle A + \angle B + \angle C = \text{one straight angle}\]
Sides of an n-sided polygon
\[\text{number of sides} = \text{number of vertices} = n\]

Common mistake: Thinking any shape with equal sides is regular. A rhombus has equal sides but unequal angles, so it is not regular.

Types of Triangles

  • By sides: equilateral has all sides equal, isosceles has two, scalene has none equal.
  • A right triangle has one right angle. The longest side, opposite it, is the hypotenuse.
  • If the longest side squared equals the sum of squares of the other two, the triangle is right-angled.
Right triangle rule (c is longest side)
\[a^2 + b^2 = c^2\]

Common mistake: Squaring the wrong side. Always check whether the longest side squared equals the sum of squares of the two shorter sides.

Perimeter and Area of Shapes

  • Perimeter is the total length around a shape. Add all its sides.
  • Area is the space a shape covers, measured in square units like square cm.
Rectangle
\[P = 2(l + b), \quad A = l \times b\]
Square
\[P = a + a + a + a, \quad A = a \times a\]
Triangle
\[A = \frac{1}{2} \times b \times h\]
Trapezium (parallel sides a, b)
\[A = \frac{1}{2} (a + b) \times h\]

Common mistake: Mixing up perimeter and area, or forgetting the half in triangle and trapezium area formulas.

Circle: Radius, Diameter, Circumference

  • The radius joins the centre to any point on the circle.
  • The diameter passes through the centre and is twice the radius.
  • Circumference is the distance around the circle.
Diameter
\[d = 2r\]
Circumference
\[C = 2\pi r = \pi d\]

Common mistake: Using the radius where the diameter is needed, or using the diameter in 2πr and doubling twice.

Volume of Cube and Cuboid

  • Volume is the space inside a solid, measured in cubic units like cubic cm.
  • A cuboid (rectangular prism) has length, breadth and height. A cube has all edges equal.
Cuboid
\[V = l \times b \times h\]
Cube
\[V = a \times a \times a\]

Common mistake: Writing volume in square units, or adding the dimensions instead of multiplying them.

Sample questions

  1. What is a point in geometry?

    Show answer

Answer: B. A location with no size

A point is defined as a specific location in space and has no size or dimension.

  2. Which of the following is a quadrilateral?

    Show answer

    Answer: B. Square

A quadrilateral is a shape with four sides, and a square is one of the types of quadrilaterals.

  3. If the radius of a circle is 7 cm, what is its diameter?

    Show answer

    Answer: B. 14 cm

    The diameter of a circle is twice the radius. Therefore, diameter = 2 * radius = 2 * 7 cm = 14 cm.

  4. If a trapezium has bases of length 10 cm and 6 cm and a height of 4 cm, what is its area?

    Show answer

    Answer: A. 32 cm²

    The area of a trapezium is calculated using the formula: Area = 1/2 * (Base1 + Base2) * Height. Thus, Area = 1/2 * (10 cm + 6 cm) * 4 cm = 32 cm².

  5. Calculate the area of a triangle with a base of 8 cm and a height of 5 cm.

    Show answer

    Answer: A. 20 cm²

    The area of a triangle can be calculated using the formula: Area = 1/2 * Base * Height. Here, Area = 1/2 * 8 cm * 5 cm = 20 cm².
